Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka Tuesday (13) morning flew to Jaffna peninsula with the intention of receiving an update on ground realities after meeting Jaffna based senior military officers.During the meeting at Jaffna Security Forces Headquarters (SFHQ-J), the visiting Commander received a comprehensive account of security developments after the fall of Elephant Pass into Army hands.Major General M.C.M.P. Samarasinghe Commander SF-J who received the Army Chief on his arrival at the Palaly airstrip briefed the Commander on the status quo in relation to security in the peninsula before commencement of the meeting. Similarly, Major General Samarasinghe, outlined the security arrangements planned under the current security situation.Senior ground commanders present at the meeting explained their chief about respective ongoing and pending military offensives in operational areas and also their civil roles vis-a-vis humanitarian services in cleared areas. Commander also addressed the brave soldiers and officers who are serving in the peninsula and congratulated them for their recent military victories and commented on possible LTTE threat perceptions and highlighted the importance of being vigil at all times, since losing Tigers are poised to cripple normalcy in the peninsula at any cost.A few senior officers of the Army Headquarters were also associated with the visit to the peninsula.
