ONE more airstrip of the LTTE terrorists with a width of 25 meters and length of 350 meters was completely brought under the control of the Army Wednesday (24) forenoon as the troops moved in further north of AMPAKAMAM in MULLAITTIVU. Subsequent to continuous offensive operations conducted by the troops of the 632 brigade commanded by Lieutenant Colonel SUBHASHANA WELIKALA operating under the Task Force-III commanded by Brigadier SATHYAPRIYA LIYANAGE, captured the LTTE runway in the jungle area about 2 km east of oldKANDYroad south of IRANAMADU. The well-constructed tarmac running from north to south had been secured with a deep trench line on either side. 20 SLSR (Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment) troops commanded by Lieutenant Colonel DARSHANA WIJESEKARA, after a risky walk across the land laden with claymore mines, booby traps and Anti Personnel Mines reached the tarmac from its western edge by Wednesday (24) morning. This was the third LTTE airstrip captured by the Army troops during WANNI humanitarian operations. 57 Division troops dominating PANIKKANKULAM area captured the first LTTE airstrip with a length of 500 meters about 7 km northwest of MANKULAM on 30th September 2008.
